To uphold our commitment to our academic partners while ensuring the health and safety of our patients, staff, and community, ZSFG has adopted additional standards for students, instructors, and faculty assigned to ZSFG to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission on our campus. These standards apply to all schools with placements on the ZSFG campus other than UCSF. UCSF and ZSFG have alignment in standards and share processes for managing UCSF students, instructors, and faculty at ZSFG.

This outline will provide guidance for both our academic partners and the organization. Failure to comply with these standards may result in the termination of placement. Academic partners can contact their DPH student placement coordinator or ZSFG department representative with questions or for more information. ZSFG and SFDPH staff with questions about these standards may contact Justin Dauterman directly (6-4171).

General

  1. These ZSFG COVID-19 standards are applicable to all non-UCSF students, instructors, and faculty placed on the ZSFG campus, regardless of their employment. Current ZSFG/DPH staff who are completing a placement at ZSFG as a student or serve as an academic instructor for students on the ZSFG campus will be required to adhere to the same standards as other students and instructors, including weekly serial testing.
  1. ZSFG will continue to have decreased availability for student placements. Please contact the student placement coordinator for your discipline for more details. Nursing will update CCPS to reflect capacities.
  1. Students shall not be assigned to patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and those with suspected COVID-19.
  1. Students, faculty, and instructors on our campus must comply with all ZSFG infection control policies and procedures, including the standards for personal protective equipment, symptoms and illness reporting, procedures related to exposures, testing, and vaccination.

Symptom screening

  1. Schools are responsible for implementing a process by which students, instructors, and faculty are screened for symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection daily when scheduled to be on the ZSFG campus.
  1. Any persons with symptoms are not to report to campus and must be tested for COVID-19 within 24 hours of symptom onset.

Testing

  1. In addition to testing after symptom onset, students, instructors, and faculty will have serial testing weekly during their placement at ZSFG, regardless of vaccination status.
    • Unless coordinated by the school, testing is the responsibility of the person being tested. ZSFG will not perform the test.
    • ZSFG will accept the results from the testing method (PCR or antigen) endorsed by the school if the testing method has been approved by the CDC.
    • Test result must be completed within 72 hours before the first day the student, instructor, or faculty are scheduled to be at ZSFG that week.
    • Results of the test are shared by the student, instructors, and faculty with their school.
    • Schools are responsible for collecting and monitoring student test results.
    • Requests by ZSFG for test result documentation shall be fulfilled within 48 hours.
  1. Schools shall alert ZSFG to positive test results as soon as possible by emailing ZSFG.student-contact-tracing@sfdph.org.

Positive Results

  1. Within 24 hours of notification of a positive test result, the school will complete the “ZSFG Academic Partner Preliminary Contact Investigation Worksheet.” Completed worksheets are emailed to ZSFG.student-contact-tracing@sfdph.org.
  1. The person with a positive test result must call Occupational Health Services (OHS) at 628-206-4100 to be triaged.
    • Identify Justin Dauterman as the person’s ZSFG manager.
    • OHS will send off-work instructions by email to the person with a positive test result and Justin Dauterman.
    • The student, instructor or faculty must call OHS to get clearance to return to the campus. A notice will be sent by email once the person has been cleared.
  1. Contact tracings are completed for every positive test result reported.
    • OHS and ZSFG Infection Control will conduct tracings for staff and patients.
    • OHS will contact trace the student if they are on the ZSFG campus during the infectious window. If other students meet exposure criteria to the source student while on the ZSFG campus during the infectious window, OHS will contact trace them, send them for testing, etc. per protocol.
  1. Per CDC and CDPH guidelines, persons having had COVID-19 need not be retested for 90-days unless they experience symptoms as there is a likelihood of false-positives from viral shedding.

Vaccination

  1. All students, instructors, and faculty placed on the ZSFG campus must be fully vaccinated by September 30, 2021.
    • No exceptions will be granted after this date.
    • Any person who has not completed their vaccination series before this date shall not report for their placement.
    • The vaccination series must be completed at least 2 weeks prior to reporting for their placement.
    • Requests by ZSFG for vaccination documentation shall be fulfilled within 48 hours.
  1. Persons that have not been vaccinated may receive their vaccination at ZSFG
    • Students, instructors, and faculty may not report for their placement until they have completed the entire vaccination series.
    • The vaccination series must be completed at least 2 weeks prior to reporting for their placement.
